Creating and restore image using the built-in features in Windows

Create a Windows recovery environment and capture or restore a Windows image using REAgentC, DISM and DiskPart.

The restore workflow wipes the selected disk

The DiskPart restore sequence includes clean. Confirm the target disk and ensure required data is backed up before using the restore procedure.

Configure Windows Recovery Environment

>_Register the Windows RE image

reagentc /setreimage /path S:\Recovery\WindowsRE

Register the push-button reset image location:

>_Register the OS image

reagentc /setosimage /path R:\RecoveryImage /index 1

Capture a system image

>_Capture the Windows partition

dism /Capture-Image /ImageFile:"D:\fabrikam.wim" /CaptureDir:C:\ /Name:Fabrikam /ConfigFile:<configuration list>

Example configuration file:

[ExclusionList]
\BigFolder

Prepare the disk for restore

Boot into Windows PE, open DiskPart and prepare the destination disk:

select disk 0
clean
create partition primary size=3000 id=27
format quick fs=ntfs label="Recovery"
assign letter="R"
create partition primary size=300
format quick fs=ntfs label="System"
assign letter="S"
active
create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs label="Windows"
assign letter="C"
exit

Apply the captured image

Restore the image from the required network or removable-media location:

>_Apply the image

dism /apply-image /imagefile:N:\Images\my-windows-partition.wim /index:1 /ApplyDir:C:\
