Install Docker Engine from Docker's supported package repository and use the current Docker Compose plugin.

Use the instructions for the installed Linux distribution
Repository URLs, signing-key handling and supported operating-system releases change. Use Docker's current distribution-specific repository instructions rather than copying an old apt-key or CentOS repository recipe unchanged.
Install Docker Engine
After configuring Docker's supported repository for the target distribution, the current package set on Debian/Ubuntu-family systems includes:
Install Docker Engine and plugins
apt install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io docker-buildx-plugin docker-compose-plugin
Verify the installation:
Verify Docker
systemctl status docker docker version docker compose version docker run --rm hello-world
Docker Compose
Current Docker installations use:
Start a Compose project
docker compose up -d
The old standalone docker-compose binary is not the preferred installation path for a new Docker Engine deployment.
The docker group is highly privileged
Membership of the docker group normally provides a path to root-equivalent control of the host. Grant it only to trusted administrators or evaluate Docker rootless mode.
