Use iPerf as a client/server tool for measuring TCP or UDP throughput, jitter and loss between two systems.

The original article describes iPerf as a bandwidth-performance testing tool that can vary TCP/UDP parameters and report bandwidth, delay jitter and datagram loss.

Legacy version notes
The original page referenced iPerf 2.0.5, JPerf 2.0.2 and older packaged builds. Treat those version numbers as historical context rather than a current release recommendation.
Test data
For WAN tests where compression is used, the original procedure recommends a non-compressible test file such as a large JPEG.

The original example runs 14 parallel TCP connections for one minute:
