Historical third-party offline local-account recovery method for Windows systems.
Legacy and unsupported recovery method
The original article modified the offline Windows SAM database with chntpw. This is not a Microsoft-supported password-recovery workflow, can affect protected credentials, and cannot bypass BitLocker encryption without the recovery key.
Validation status
Reviewed on 27 September 2026 and retained only as historical reference. For managed Windows systems, use the organisation's supported identity, LAPS, break-glass, recovery or re-provisioning process.
Preferred recovery paths
Depending on account type and management model, use an approved method such as:
- Domain or Microsoft Entra account recovery.
- Windows LAPS for managed local administrator accounts.
- A controlled break-glass local account.
- BitLocker recovery followed by approved offline repair where necessary.
- Re-provisioning/reset where account recovery is not appropriate.
Historical method
The previous Tech-Wiki article booted SystemRescue, mounted an unencrypted Windows volume and edited the local SAM database with chntpw.
That method is deliberately not presented as the default Tech-Wiki recovery workflow for current Windows deployments.
